Having been stuck behind a desk, intensely pen pushing for 7 months, the University summer break couldn’t have come soon enough!

After a very successful trip to the Oldtimer Grand Prix event at the ‘ring in August of last year I was keen to get back to the track dubbed the ‘Green Hell’ by Jackie Stewart for more classic racing action. Oldtimer in German is a term the encompasses pretty much all classic cars, but anything late 70s onwards is strangely referred to as a ‘Youngtimer’.

Vauxhall have been aggressively marketing their VXR cars of late, the performance variants of their range of cars. Nearly every model in the line up gets the treatment, even the mini MPV Meriva getting a lairy bodykit to go with an 180PS turbo engine. The car spearheading this charge is the thunderous 414PS VXR8, a badge-engineered Holden, from GM’s Australian arm. Appealing as these cars sound, in these times of record petrol prices and prohibitive CO2 road tax, any manufacturer selling performance cars is facing a tough time.

I've finally got my E28 back from the garage, and it is looking resplendent. Nevertheless, I have to question the sense in spending money on a car worth so little. Despite the purchase price of £450, complete with a folder full of bills amounting to thousands in the past few years along, spending north of £1200 on it that I'll probably never see again stings a little.

I made my first trip to the 'Ring in March to watch a VLN race, which is a series of 4 hour endurance races that runs throughout the year with a range of cars competing. Cars as humble as Toyota Yaris's (Yarii?) raced around the 17km green hell with stuff as exotic as fully prepped 997s, Gallardos and F430s.
